چکیده

Systematic doping of pure molten KNO3 bath by sodium nitride was used to analyze the effect of salt poisoning on the mechanical performances of chemically tempered soda-lime-silicate float glass. The ion-exchange process appears partially influenced by the presence of limited amount of Na in the potassium nitride bath. The interdif‐ fusion coefficient and the penetration depth of K are invariant for NaNO3 content up to 5 wt%; conversely, the surface concentration of potassium scales with the purity of the bath, and this accounts for different compressive residual stress. Nevertheless, the overall reinforcement associated to the final strength does not show clear dependence on the used bath mainly because of the large scatter in the surface flaws sizes, as typically observed in glass.

Design and Fabrication of an Ion Exchange System

In this work, the design, fabrication and optimization of a novel ion exchange unit are presented. A simple low cost system with a modified dipping mechanism and temperature controller for ion exchange in the glass substrate with molten salt is described. The design and technical details of the system together with those of the temperature controller are discussed. The ion exchange unit is opti...

Micro-channels over the glass surface made by interaction of Ar+ laser beam and Ag+/Na+ ion-exchanged glasses

Micro-channels are made over the Ag+/Na+ ion-exchanged soda-lime glass surface by interaction of an intense Ar+ laser beam and the silver ions inside the glass matrix. The Ar+ laser beam reduces the Ag+ ions inside the matrix. The Ag+ atoms aggregate into silver nano-clusters around the interaction area, inside the glass matrix. Aggregation of the silver atoms and the thermal effects of the int...

XAFS Studies of Silver Environments in Ion-Exchanged Glasses

The X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) technique was used to analyze the structural geometry of Ag atoms introduced into soda-lime silicate glass and soda aluminosilicate glass by ion-exchange methods. The results show that Ag ions in aluminosilicate glass are coordinated by about two oxygens and the nearest-neighbor Ag-O distance increases when the Ag-for-Na ion-exchange ratio is larger th...

Trends in Effective Diffusion Coefficients for Ion-Exchange Strengthening of Soda-Lime-Silicate Glasses

Monovalent cations enable efficient ion-exchange processes due to their high mobility in silicate glasses. Numerous properties can be modified in this way, e.g., mechanical, optical, electrical, or chemical performance. In particular, alkali cation exchange has received significant attention, primarily with respect to introducing compressive stress into the surface region of a glass, which incr...
